ISA BROWN BREEDING TIPS
WELCOME TO A NEW #ASKTHEEXPERT COLUMN WITH MAURIZIO ARDUIN – RÈGIA EXPERIMENTAL STATION OF POULTRY FARMING!
How can I create a hen Isa Brown? Or where can I find the male Isa Brown?
The Isa Brown hen, like other hybrids selected for egg production (Hy-Line, Eureka, Lohmann, etc.) are highly productive “polymethylactic” hens obtained from multiple crosses.
Males are not commercially available and are usually mixed with other males and sold as slow-growing rural beef hybrids. It should not be forgotten that when a hybrid is selected for egg production, it is difficult for the male to gain weight and the quality of the meat usually leaves much to be desired.
In any case, as with all commercial hybrids (e.g. maize), it is not worth reproducing these hens and if they are mated with other males the result is very disappointing in terms of both homogeneity and production.
