DOUBTS ABOUT THE MAGICAL WORLD OF POULTRY? #ASK THE EXPERT!
THE INDIGENOUS BREEDS OF CALABRIA
WELCOME TO A NEW CHAPTER OF THE COLUMN#QUEDILOALLESPERTO WITH MAURIZIO ARDUIN - CENTRO STUDI RÈGIA STAZIONE SPERIMENTALE DI POLLICOLTURA!
We talk about indigenous breeds, particularly with reference to the beautiful region of Calabria, thanks to Domenico's question.
Calabria, like all the regions of our country, is rich in agricultural biodiversity and the poultry sector is well represented. Before talking about the autochthonous Calabrian breeds, however, it is appropriate to clarify what is meant by an autochthonous breed. In this regard, we are helped by the 'Disciplinare del Libro genealogico delle razze avicole autoctone (Ministerial Decree No. 19536 of 1 October 2014)', which defines the indigenous poultry breed as 'a breed that originated in or has been introduced into Italy for at least 50 years and is well integrated into traditional agriculture and animal husbandry'.
No poultry breed is currently registered in the National Poultry Herd Book. According to existing historical documentation, however, there are no less than four breeds that can claim the title of native Calabrian breed: the Rossa di Reggio Calabria, the Mediterranea, the Livornese bianca and the New Hampshire.
Three characteristics are needed to register a breed in the herd book: historical documentation, animals and keeper breeders. The historical documentation and the animals are there, only the guardian breeders are waiting. You could be next!
