Henhouse management in winter

WELCOME TO A NEW CHAPTER OF THE COLUMN#QUEDILOALLESPERTO WITH MAURIZIO ARDUIN - CENTRO STUDI RÈGIA STAZIONE SPERIMENTALE DI POLLICOLTURA!

How to manage the henhouse when it snows?

When it snows, the henhouse, if rationally built and populated, should be managed normally as in other months.

The concentration within the shelter must be four animals per square metre; half of the shelter area must be equipped with perches while the other half (permanent litter) must be filled with a layer of approximately 10 cm of lego shavings. This bedding can be kept for up to 12 months before being changed.

The hens must always have free access to the pasture even when there is snow outside.

Of course, trampling by the hens can melt the snow and turn the parcel adjacent to the chicken coop into a muddy field. In this case, we recommend spreading a generous layer of straw in order to prevent the formation of mud.
