When hens eat eggs

WELCOME TO A NEW CHAPTER OF THE COLUMN #CHIEDILOALLESPERTO WITH MAURIZIO ARDUIN - CENTRO STUDI RÈGIA STAZIONE SPERIMENTALE DI POLLICOLTURA!
My hens eat their eggs as soon as they are laid in the nest, what can I do?
The egg is the fruit of reproductive activity that the hen defends in the best possible way.
Sometimes, however, it happens that the hens eat their own eggs.
This happens when using the wrong nests, or in other situations that lead accidentally breaking the egg.
When a hen discovers that there is a coloured sphere (yolk) inside its shell, its curiosity is immediately attracted taking it to peck at the other eggs to check for the presence of the 'red ball'.
From an accidental situation then starts the curiosity and 'desire to play' that quickly turns into a vice.
All it takes is one, or a few, hens to start this 'game' and immediately the others imitate the former and before long all the animals are hunting for eggs to crack and eat.
In fact, one must not forget animals learn by imitation.
To prevent these situations causes of egg breakage must be avoided: It is important to do a lot focus on nest building and to the number or arrangement of nests within the shelters.
When, on the other hand, the hens have already acquired this habit, it is possible to limit damage by using 'goggles'. restricting the sight of hens.
