Can I keep only one domestic hen?
The hen is a sociable animal accustomed to living in a group.
Like all 'herd' animals, hens also feel the need to set up 'closed' groups within which to develop a strict hierarchy, with the identification of dominant players.
Respect for the hierarchical ladder is an indispensable condition for the maintaining tranquillity, for avoiding fearful situations and to maintain a good level of well-being.
Especially when the hens are resting, perched on their perches, one can see how 'seek' the closeness of their fellow human beings, they stick to other hens even when the roosting space is large.
It is generally recommended to breed at least one group consisting of three hens in order to achieve an internal hierarchy.
When breeding a single hen, it is easy to observe how it seeks the company of other animals possibly present, beings including humans.
